The
History of Ceramic Singing Bowls
These
unique Ceramic Singing Bowls are a recent discovery of Marston’s
and quite accidental yet magical
at the same time. “I was making really nice bowls of the deep
red, strong, pliable clay that I loved
- firing a little hotter than normal due to the erratic nature of our
old kiln and
to get the clay dark and on this spiritual path - when I started noticing
the
bowls had this amazing sound when tapped. They sounded like bells, it
was beautiful. One night it just occurred to me to try to sing them
as a metal
singing bowl, and it worked! So magical. I thought it was just a fluke
but over the years have started to figure out the process to recreate
them consistently."
There
is not one thing that makes them sing, it is the combination
of materials and skill… the red earthenware clay is certainly
important, yet so are the thin walls, the shape, glaze ingredients,
firing temperature and more. And not all the bowls come out as
“opera singers,” these bowls are marked down and sold as
a regular
bowls for food.
Over
the years, as Marston's techniques, craft, and artistic
expression have grown, so have the popularity of these unique
instruments, earning her national fame as an artist. |
